Our Opinion of The Marine

The Marine Hermanus is an exceptional hotel, its elegant, white sea-facing façade occupying a stunning location perched on the cliffs overlooking the majestic Walker Bay. A pretty terrace and lawn, leading to steps down to the beach, offer a perfect vantage point to soak in the coastal atmosphere. Inside, large single-pane arched windows flood the space with natural light, perfectly framing the panoramic views across the bay.

From the moment you arrive, the staff set the tone for your stay - welcoming, friendly, and attentive. The entrance hall, along with the Sun Lounge and bar, exudes a calm and relaxed vibe, making it a perfect spot to unwind. Exploring the hotel reveals hallways filled with interesting art and artefacts, with memorabilia from celebrity guests like Rick Stein and Brad Pitt adding a touch of intrigue and glamour.

The hotel’s interior design is strikingly elegant, blending luxury with a feminine, sophisticated charm. Think Laura Ashley meets Designers Guild - refined but never overdone. This theme carries through to the spacious rooms and suites, many of which boast spectacular sea views. The huge corner suites offer indulgent space and views and are our favourite.

When it comes to dining, The Marine excels. The service is impeccable, and each dish is not only delicious but also beautifully presented on refined tableware, making every meal a memorable experience.

While the hotel itself is a haven of relaxation, it also offers smart facilities. The Riviera-style heated pool area provides a perfect spot for lounging, while the lovely little spa offers pampering treatments. For those who like to stay active, there's a small but well-equipped gym.

For nature lovers, a walk along the nearby Cliff Top trail is a must. From June to November, this trail becomes a prime whale-watching spot, but even outside of whale season, it’s a picturesque walk, perfect for spotting birds and rock dassies. The trail is dotted with art installations and informative public service points that touch on topics from nature to astronomy, including a 3.8km scale model of the solar system.

Hermanus itself is a gem, and The Marine is the perfect base for exploring this gorgeous town, whether you’re into nature, art, or great food & wine. It’s a hotel that delivers luxury and warmth in equal measure, making it an unforgettable property that you will want to return to.
