Our Opinion of Lion Sands River Lodge

Lion Sands River Lodge offers a striking blend of modern luxury and wilderness immersion in South Africa's renowned Sabi Sands Nature Reserve. On arrival, you’re struck by a distinctly modern aesthetic, blending clean geometric lines that evoke a somewhat corporate feel, yet surprisingly manage to complement its natural surroundings.

The heart of the lodge impresses with its thoughtful design, where an open-plan reception flows into a spacious, light-filled building housing retail and creative spaces. The elegant bar, lounge, and restaurant, all adorned with expansive glass doors, seamlessly merge indoor comfort with the outdoor experience. The structures skirt the main deck, offering breathtaking views of the river – a vantage point that transforms into a canvas of colour during the early morning sunrise.

While the communal spaces exude luxury, the standard accommodations present a slight contrast. Connected by charming wooden walkways, the semi-detached, thatched rooms are cozy but compact. The large, comfortable beds are a highlight, but the limited bathroom and deck space may leave some guests wanting, especially given the price point. During our stay, the virtually unusable WiFi was a notable drawback. For those seeking more space and amenities, the four River Suites offer a premium experience complete with private plunge pools.

The real highlight, though, is the Lion Sands safari experience. It's a larger operation compared to some of the more intimate lodges in the Sabi Sands, but it doesn’t compromise on quality. The game drives are nothing short of spectacular, showcasing the richness of the reserve's wildlife. From giraffes and elephants to hyenas and waterbucks, the diversity is impressive. Our guides struck a perfect balance between youthful enthusiasm and seasoned expertise, enhancing every sighting. Unforgettable moments included an up-close encounter with a pride of lions and witnessing two male leopards in a territorial face-off.

For the adventurous, the reserve's tree house presents a unique opportunity for an overnight stay under the stars – a truly romantic and immersive experience.

While the dining and service at the lodge are pleasant, they don't quite reach the exceptional standards set by some competitors in the area. Similarly, the entry-level rooms, despite their comfort, fall short of the contemporary luxury promised by the main lodge.

In summary, Lion Sands River Lodge delivers a superb safari experience in an impressive setting. Its modern design and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities are standout features. However, competition in the prestigious Sabi Sands area is fierce and there is room for improvement to fully justify its luxury positioning.
