Our Opinion of The Oberoi Beach Resort

The Oberoi Beach Resort in Mauritius stands as a timeless icon of luxury on the island's northwest coast. This well-established resort has maintained its high-end status for over a decade, offering guests a serene tropical escape with stunning sunset views over the Indian Ocean.

Set within 20 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, the property boasts mature tropical gardens and elegant water features. The arrival pavillion, with its striking aqueduct and waterfall, sets the tone for a stay steeped in natural beauty and tranquility. Although the resort bears "Beach" in its name, it's worth noting that much of the waterfront is rocky and inaccessible. However, a secluded stretch of beach near the water sports hut at the northern end provides the perfect spot for sun-seekers and ocean lovers.

There are accommodation options to suit a variety of preferences, ranging from entry-level Pavilions to detached Luxury Villas. While the interiors are consistent across room types, the Villas offer the added luxury of private, walled gardens, some featuring their own pools. The rooms are bathed in natural light, creating bright, inviting spaces that are impeccably maintained. The annual refreshing of marble surfaces is a testament to the resort's commitment to upkeep.

However, some aspects of the rooms show signs of age. Bathrooms feature a single sink and lack separate toilet areas, while the limited power outlets (without USB ports) may frustrate tech-savvy travellers. Modern amenities such as kettles, coffee machines, and mini-bars feel somewhat cramped in their allocated spaces. For those seeking more spacious accommodations, the resort offers more sizeable options including a two-bedroom villa, the Presidential Villa, and the expansive Royal Villa.

Dining at The Oberoi is a highlight, with a diverse array of restaurants catering to various tastes. The Restaurant, housed under a soaring traditional thatched roof, serves a blend of Creole, Indian, and international cuisines. For a truly memorable dining experience, On The Rocks offers delicious grilled seafood, salads, and pasta in a spectacular seafront setting. The Gunpowder Room provides themed dining nights, including Japanese cuisine, within an atmospheric 18th-century colonial building. For a unique experience, The Herb Trail offers communal al fresco dining around a fire pit and smoke house, set amidst the resort's herb garden.

Despite its relatively compact size, The Oberoi impresses with its range of high-quality facilities. Guests can indulge in spa treatments, maintain their fitness regimen, play tennis, or browse the on-site boutique. The resort caters to families with a kids' club, while adults can enjoy a dedicated pool and bar area at the southern end of the property. An extensive list of complimentary daily activities ensures that guests always have options for entertainment and enrichment.

The Oberoi Beach Resort in Mauritius is ideally suited for travellers seeking attentive service, serenity, and relaxation in a beautiful tropical setting. While some aspects of the rooms may feel dated, the stunning location, excellent dining options, and comprehensive facilities make The Oberoi a compelling choice for a luxurious Mauritian getaway.

The Oberoi Beach Resort Summary

The Oberoi Mauritius is located at Turtle Bay on the northwest coast of Mauritius. It has twenty acres of lush sub-tropical gardens, six hundred metres of ocean front and is surrounded by a turquoise lagoon; a majestic range of green mountains can be seen on the horizon.

The 20 acre site of The Oberoi Mauritius occupies a headland facing west. It is essentially a flat plateau, rising some 100 metres above sea-level. During the development of the foundation while basic grading was being undertaken, huge naturally-worn boulders (many as big as a car) were discovered just under the soil and have been used to form the contours of the gardens and landscape. The swimming pools –which are right on the beach - are hidden from view from the guest rooms. The resort is entered by driving past a 12 metre high aqueduct - reminiscent of the aqueducts used to water the sugar cane fields - which spills water into a natural freshwater pond. High vertical edges of this pond are softened with the profusely flowering yellow Allamanda.

Guest rooms and public buildings have been dyed ‘rust’ to match the natural volcanic boulders and the roofs are covered with a thick sugar cane thatch. The walls are stacked boulders which complete a very rustic landscape palette which enhances the natural curves of the hotel site. All rooms have been integrated with the natural landscape so that the resort is more like a spacious garden than a hotel building.
