Our Opinion of Jawakara Islands

Jawakara Islands, situated on the eastern rim of the Lhaviyani Atoll, offers a vibrant and contemporary escape in the Maldives. Just a 35-minute seaplane journey from Malé, this resort comprises two connected islands—Mabin and Dheru—linked by a picturesque jetty that spans a wide lagoon teeming with turtles.

Mabin is the larger of the two islands, stretching over 1.4km and housing more than 200 guest villas along with most of the resort’s facilities. It caters to families and groups with a variety of accommodation options, including multi-room villas ideal for all ages. Mabin offers flexibility in dining, with meal plans ranging from bed & breakfast to Premium All-Inclusive.

Dheru, by contrast, is more exclusive, featuring just 88 villas. All guests here enjoy the Premium All-Inclusive package, which includes access to dining and activities on both islands, as well as personalized villa host services. This arrangement adds a touch of luxury and convenience for those seeking a more tailored experience.

Guests familiar with Crown & Champa resorts will recognize the signature villa design: practical, boxy, yet comfortable. We liked the multi-room villas, which are ideal for families of all ages – a key target market.

Given the size of the island, on Mabin, a shuttle buggy service with frequent stops ensures convenient transportation across the expansive island. Dheru offers a more personalized approach—villa hosts are available via WhatsApp for on-demand buggy pickups. Bicycles are also available, provided complimentary for Premium All-Inclusive guests and available for rent on other plans.

Some beach areas on Jawakara have been reclaimed and the sunrise in particular can be a little corally underfoot: a sunrise side villa location is definitely preferable. The lagoon offers low-key snorkelling with occasional sightings of sea turtles, while access to the reef requires a short boat ride, available twice daily at no extra cost.

Dining at Jawakara is generally of a good standard. Dheru’s main restaurant, Vela, offers a high-quality buffet experience complete with live cooking stations and an impressive cold room. Mabin’s equivalent restaurants, Saima and Aila, provide similar offerings in a slightly more compact setting. For a la carte options, UMI, the overwater Asian restaurant, stands out as a guest favourite. Molo serves Mediterranean cuisine, and Hideout, located at the golf course, delivers a satisfying clubhouse dining experience.

Jawakara excels in its facilities. The resort boasts a well-equipped dive centre, multiple gyms, luxurious spas, games rooms, and an extensive kids’ club, making it an ideal destination for active families. The golf facility is particularly noteworthy, featuring a driving range, a beautifully designed short course, and a simulator for those desperate to scratch the ball-whacking itch.

While Jawakara Islands may not introduce groundbreaking innovations to the Maldives, it successfully elevates the tried-and-true formula of large-scale resorts. With its modern amenities, family-friendly design, and diverse range of activities, it’s a versatile choice that caters to a wide audience, especially active families.
