Our Opinion of Jetwing Surf

Located a stone’s throw from surfer paradise Arugam Bay on the island’s unspoilt east coast, Jetwing Surf is the embodiment of eco-luxury.

Everything in the hotel seems to be recycled or at least to have sustainability in mind somewhere along the line — from toilet paper made from recycled wheat husk (much more comfortable than it sounds) to the waste water, which is treated and later used to irrigate the hotel’s gardens.

This focus on responsible tourism will mean you have to sacrifice some creature comforts like air conditioning and television, though. Instead, three main fans keep the air moving around the room and more can be added at your request.

The cabanas — of which there are just 20 — are spacious, private and comfortable, and the open air bathroom really does make you feel at one with nature.

The infinity pool is a welcome oasis from the heat in this part of the country, and there are much worse places to read your book than from one of the lovely day beds.

The restaurant at Surf is really impressive. Our advice is to opt for the Sri Lankan curry selection, which was one of the best meals we had on our entire trip.

Whether you’re looking to ride the waves that the region is famous for, embark on a safari in the nearby Kumana National park or simply take a few sun-filled days to recharge the batteries, Jetwing Surf is a great place to be.

Jetwing Surf Summary

Jetwing Surf is top-end ecotourism — meaning none of the great service one expects from luxury hotels is sacrificed at the price of sustainability.

The hotel is made up of just 20 spacious cabanas, which are constructed from locally-sourced materials. Each one features an open-air bathroom, sofas, a deck and a Nespresso coffee machine.

Located just minutes away from surfer destination Arugam Bay, the hotel is perfectly situated for those learning to ride the waves and those more experienced — and has plenty of unspoilt beach for those just looking to catch some rays.

The open-air restaurant serves a range of cuisines a la carte or set menu and the wine list is varied with plenty of imports.

Jetwing Surf is located 313 kilometres from Colombo.
