Our Opinion of The Winchester Hotel

The most recent Angelfish visitors to The Winchester Hotel were Dan & Jo.

The Winchester is a characterful boutique hotel that recently became part of the Newmark Hotels portfolio and benefitted from a top-to-bottom refurbishment. Dating from the 1920’s, the elegant, twin-gabled frontage is a landmark on Beach Road, located just a couple of miles from the bustling Waterfront hub in Cape Town.

The Winchester’s hidden gem is the glorious, bougainvillea-adorned central courtyard with arched interior balconies, exuding ambience and a sense of occasion that demands a glass of bubbles to accompany your afternoon tea.

The 76 rooms and suites range from the entry level loft rooms, perfect city hotel rooms as a base for exploring, to the spacious Premium and Arcadia suites. Well-considered interiors and artwork lend a genuine touch of class. We’d recommend the sea-facing Luxury Balcony Suites to make the most of the views.

We found dining to be of a very high standard, from a super breakfast in Shoreditch Restaurant which combines an extensive buffet and a la carte options (mushrooms on toast in pesto and parmesan was our favourite), to an eclectic dinner menu that really leaves guests spoilt for choice. The veranda at Harveys bar, popular with guests and locals alike, provides a perfect location for watching the world go by along Sea Point promenade, while sampling some delicious snacks, like chili BBQ edamame beans and curried cauli florets. It’s all seriously delicious, incredibly reasonably priced, and delivered with genuine, smiling hospitality.

The small but welcoming and lushly-decorated spa oozes tranquillity and has both single and couples treatment rooms. Group and private stretch & tone sessions are available to book that take place in the little gym and outside by the pool. Or to take in some of the local sights (Mouille Point Lighthouse, Cape Town Stadium, Queens Beach, 12 Apostles mountains), enjoy guided power-walks, either towards the Waterfront or Clifton Beach.

Impossible to miss, The Winchester Hotel stands out with bold appeal on the edge of the ever-vibrant Sea Point Promenade. The splendour of this 1920s Cape Dutch-style icon is rivalled only by the views of Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean that frame the establishment.

Although extensively renovated in 2021, The Winchester Hotel retains its innate charm and a sense of nostalgia that so many both locally and from around the world have come to know and love. Sophisticated finishes, detailed ceilings and modern décor have been brought together to create a grand setting, and leads guests through the entrance to the grandiose courtyard.

The Winchester offers a selection of 76 tastefully appointed suites, classic rooms and lofts that are characterised by a monochromatic theme with splashes of colour and quirky accents. Select rooms offer remarkable ocean or mountain views that elevate the hotel's calm ambience.

Loft Rooms (25sqm)

The 16 en-suite loft rooms feature views of the hotel's courtyard and Table Mountain.

Classic Rooms (28sqm)

The 32 classic en-suite rooms have been designed in a loft style and are non-sea facing.

Junior Mountain Suites (57sqm)

Four junior suites face the mountain and feature a large en-suite bathroom and a separate lounge area.

The 14 sea-facing junior suites also feature a large en-suite bedroom and separate lounge area.
