Prince Maurice, flagship of the excellent Mauritian operator Constance Hotels & Resorts, is a first-class resort of the highest standard, meticulously integrated into the natural environment amongst 60 acres of exotic tropical gardens. This helps generate a sense of occasion: on arrival through the main gates and along the driveway, or descending to the helipad, one quickly gets the feeling of being somewhere special. Bordering a natural fish reserve among the mangrove swamps to one side, and overlooking a beautiful lagoon, the elegant and airy Mauritian architecture blends seamlessly into its surroundings. No expense has been spared on the natural materials of wood, sandstone, marble and thatch-work, or on the beautiful interior furnishings that adorn the décor of this resort.

Most of the suites are arranged in small, private two-storied houses and the resort offers the only accommodation on the island built on stilts over a lagoon. The colonial style interiors are starting to look a little dated, but are fastidiously maintained, and so still feel luxurious, and there are rumours of an imminent revamp. There are also 12 gorgeous and spacious individual villas, 3 on stilts and 9 with direct beach access and private pools. For the ultimate in luxury and privacy, there’s also the jaw-dropping 350 sqm Princely Villa, which can accommodate a family of up to 6 adults and 3 children.

Constance pride themselves on gastronomy and it really shows at Prince Maurice, with dining and service unsurpassed on the island. Main restaurant Archipel hosts sumptuous buffets during the day and a la carte service in the evening, Asian embraces the Orient, while the Lotus Lounge and Laguna bars are both delightful for pre- and post-dinner drinks. The copious 25,000-bottle Wine Cellar is worth a visit and we recommend the sommelier-hosted tastings. The jewel in the crown is Le Barachois, situated on tented pontoon decks, reached by an atmospheric, lantern-lit walkway amongst the mangroves. The setting, combined with exquisite menus, mean dinners here will linger in the memory.

As well as first-class facilities, such as the spa, water & land sports, lap pool and kids’ club, Prince Maurice boasts two Championship golf courses, Legends and Links. Both courses are hugely enjoyable to play and the level of service is exemplary. Golfers will love the experience, and both club houses are welcome venues for unwinding after a round. The Deerhunter restaurant at Legends is remarkably high standard and we suggest a visit even for non-golfers.
